F.A.Q.

What is Pilates?

Developed in the early 20th Century by Joseph Pilates it was originally called Contrology - emphasising control of the body through the mind.

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise which focuses on strengthening muscles whilst improving posture, flexibility, balance and body awareness.

Emphasis is on moving with control, whilst maintaining correct alignment and using mindful breathing techniques rather than speed and heavy exertion.  Which makes this form of exercise accessible to all it is especially useful following injury or as we age.

There are two main types of pilates MAT which is carried out on the floor with or without additional equipment/props and REFORMER which uses specialised equipment with springs and a sliding carriage to aid resistance.

Benefits of Pilates include

*increased flexibility and mobility

   *improves muscle tone without bulk

*supports back health and reduces pain

*it is suitable for all fitness levels

What do I need to bring to class?

Yourself, some water if you like, a mat if you have one, although I do have some you can use.   I can provide head/knee pads, and any other equipment that we may use ie:  soft balls, bands etc

What should I wear?

Wear clothes that allow you to move freely, leggings or yoga pants are great - a fitted top if possible long or short sleeved.   Avoid bulky clothing such as jogging bottoms (the thick sort) and hoodies or clothes that are too floaty.   It's important that the instructor can see the bodies she is working with.

How long is a session?

Class sessions are 50-60 minutes long

1:1  are approximately 45 mins.
